Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (King George Medical College) Lucknow was founded in the year 1911. It is a frontrunner among medical education institutions in the country. It was initially named The King George Medical College. By an act passed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh on the 16th September 2002, the college was transferred under a new university, called the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University. The institution is committed to the dissemination and advancement of knowledge in biomedical sciences and establishing itself as a centre of excellence in tertiary level health care in the state.

The University is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU). National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited the university with a rating of B+.

Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University is situated in the heart of the historic city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The university campus is spread over an area of roughly 100,000 sq meters. Separate hostels are provided for boys and girls. The huge playground of Sardar Patel Hostel at the intersection of Shahmina Road and MG Road has been divided to accommodate the ambitious Scientific Convention Centre. There are Juice shops, Parag Dairy, Nescafe Booth etc. in the university campus. The university provides a Central Library facility for its students.
